The Australian Academy of Science is a not-for-profit organisation comprising individuals elected for their outstanding contributions to science and research. The Academy champions, celebrates and supports excellence in Australian science: promotes international scientific engagement; builds public awareness and understanding of science, and provides independent, authoritative and influential scientific advice. The Academy provides science-based advice to Australian governments via submissions, position papers, commissioned research, direct engagement with MPs and Senators and with departmental officials. The Academy also works with its National Committees for science and with other research sector organisations to advocate for general and discipline-based science priorities The Academy facilitates access to global science and technology and promotes strategic partnerships between Australian and overseas researchers by assisting the Australian government to deliver some of its international science activities, including fellowship and symposia. It works with Australian embassies and consulates overseas and with overseas missions in Canberra to facilitate research collaborations. It hosts high-level overseas research visitors and delegations. It holds bilateral and multilateral meetings and activities with a number of academies of science or groupings of academies of science around the world to promote bilateral, regional and global research collaborations.
